Birding Tours
Arenal area is one of the best places in the country for birdwatching. With more than 400 species it represents a paradise for the birding lovers. Different sceneries like forest, forest edges, opens, pasture fields, lakes, rivers and roads are part of the ecosystems that we can visit during our tours, depending on which option you choose. But no matter which one we do; more than 40 bird species will be seen easily thanks our professional guides who will help you to spot and identify as much as possible. Â
Observatory Lodge
One of the best and more famous places for birding in the area. It offers a huge land where you can spend the whole day visiting the different areas into the property, which has different ecosystems in the same place. More than 350 species of birds are reported here which makes it a complete paradise for birders. Raptors, warblers, tanagers, parrots, antbirds are some of the groups of birds frequently seen in the different trails and fields they offer.
Here we offer two different schedules:
Half day: 6:00am to 12:00md
Full day: 6:00am to 4:00pm
Bogarin Trail
This is small reserve located five minutes from La Fortuna town. It has more than 2.5km of trails to enjoy the different species of birds present here like toucans, guans, tanagers, woodpeckers, parakeets and many more. The tour lasts around 3 hours. Starting at 6:00am.
PenÃnsula Road
With more than 3km and located next to the Arenal Lake, this magical road is the most famous road for birding in the area. Jacamars, woodpeckers, trogons, motmots and some antbirds are some of the common species of birds we are able to see here. This tour lasts 3 hours, stating at 6:00am.
Bosque Eterno Los Niños
This beautiful place is the biggest private reserve of Costa Rica and of course a paradise for birds that are normally hard to see like umbrella bird, yellow eared toucanet, black and yellow tanager, rufous vented ground cuckoo, and much more. It is located around 1.5 hours from La Fortuna Town. Here the tour last as minimum half day. Departing from La Fortuna at 5:00am.
Naturalist Tours
There are several options in the Arenal area to explore the magical Rain Forest. Different trails through the jungle which allow tourists being in contact with nature and spot a lot of wildlife present in this incredible paradise. Monkeys, sloths, birds, snakes, frogs, insects, bats are some the common animals possible to find during any of this naturalist walks. Besides that, the tourist will receive a lot of valuable information about them and the interaction with the forest and their natural history.Â
Mistico Hanging Bridges
With more than 60 acres of forest, more than 2 miles of trails and 15 hanging bridges (6 of them hanging ones), of different length and high, this park is one of the main attractions in the area. The tourist will have the opportunity of having a totally different perspective of the forest from the incredible bridges which are suspended in the canopy forest. Besides the magical views, there is a big chance to see a lot of wildlife that inhabits this beautiful forest. Definitely one of the best options to enjoy the experience of the Rain Forest. This tour can be done at any time of the day, but recommended time is starting between 8:00am and 9:00am or in the afternoon between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. The walk lasts between 2 and 2.5 hours.
Volcano Hike
In this activity we will visit the lava flows from the volcanic eruption of 1968. This tour is more focused in the natural history of the Arenal Volcano and all the information related to its activity and changes it has produced related to economy of La Fortuna town. It is a very nice tour to understand and learn a bit more about volcanos and geology of Costa Rica. Also, we combine the walk on lava rocks, with the forest, where the tourist will have the chance to see more wildlife and enjoy the vegetation present in the area. This tour can be done at any time of the day, but recommended time is starting between 8:00am and 9:00am or in the afternoon between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. The walk lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours.
Sloth Tour
One of the most wanted animals to see in our country is doubtless the Sloth. Fortunately for those ones who dream with seeing this unique animal, we have the perfect option. This activity consists in visiting a nice secondary growth forest in a private reserve where they naturally live. The tourist will have the chance to see the two different species – two and three toed sloth –. But not only sloths are seeing here, frogs, monkeys, toucans, birds, are some of the other animals possible to find here. There are also two hanging bridges in the middle of the forest that makes the walk very attractive to enjoy in a different way. This tour is done at 8:00am and 1:00pm. It lasts around 1.5 hours.
RÃo Celeste Hike
This incredible jewel is located around 1.5 hours from La Fortuna town. It is considered one of the most magical places for many of the tourist who visit it. This beautiful blue water river runs in the middle of the Rain Forest, where you can visit an incredible waterfall and other very nice stations of the river. The ¨Borbollones¨ – where you can see hot water bubbles emerging to the surface of the river. The Blue Lagoon, and the ¨Teñideros¨, the exact place where the river gets its unique coloration; are some the attractions along this beautiful walk. This mid-level difficulty walk lasts around 2.5 to 3 hours.
Night Walk
If you want to explore the forest activity in a totally different way, this is the option you are looking for. When the night falls into the forest, many creatures become active and start moving in the darkness. Frogs, snakes, insects, spiders, lizards and some nocturnal mammals like kinkajous, opossums and bats are constantly seen during this magical walk. And many of them can be photograph so close to have a great memory. Definitely, this is the best option to enjoy and know more about the nocturnal wildlife of our country. This walk lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. It starts at 6:00pm.
Combo Tours
3 in 1: Hanging Bridges + Volcano Hike + La Fortuna Waterfall
This is a full day activity. We start visiting Mistico Park to explore the wonderful Rain Forest through the incredible bridges suspended in the canopy forest. After around 2 hours walking and seeing different wildlife, we will drive to the next spot, the Arenal Volcano. Here the walk is focused in the natural history of this incredible natural beauty. We will visit the lava flows of the eruption of 1968 and the tourist will receive very important information related to the volcano´s natural history all the whole activity it had during many years. Then, we will visit one of the most beautiful attractions we have in the area, the incredible La Fortuna Waterfall. This is the biggest waterfall in the area, where the visitor has the opportunity of splash in the refreshing water of La Fortuna River (if the weather conditions are optimal). Around 500 stairs to the bottom of the river are waiting for you to live this incredible experience. This whole day activity starts at 8:00am.
2 in 1: Volcano Hike + La Fortuna Waterfall
This is a half day tour which combines the visit to the Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna Waterfall. We will visit first the volcano area to enjoy a nice walk on the lava flows of 1968 where the tourist will receive all the information related to the volcano and its activity and changes it has done in the area. Then, we will drive to the biggest waterfall in the area, where you will have the unique experience of swimming in the refreshing water of the La Fortuna River, after walking around 500 steps to the bottom of the river. An incredible experience that you won’t forget.
2 in 1: Hanging Bridges + La Fortuna Waterfall
This half day activity combines the visit to the magical hanging bridges of Mistico Park and La Fortuna Waterfall. First, we start with the great walk in the Rain Forest where we will pass 6 hanging bridges located in the canopy forest, from where you will enjoy incredible views of the forest and its wildlife. After this 2-hours walk, we will drive to the biggest waterfall in the area, where you will have the unique experience of swimming in the refreshing water of the La Fortuna River, after walking around 500 steps to the bottom of the river.
